"We made the crossing and started up a rugged canyon on the other side, Paint Canyon, deriving its name from Paint Creek which flows into the Clear Fork a short distance below its mouth. When about half way up the canyon, our wagon broke down and we had to send back to Father's for another wagon; the boy went with our belongings. He was gone quite a long time, and it was almost noon when the load was transferred from the broken wagon to the other, so we ate a lunch we had brought, then started on our way again. The road, which led over the steep hills and canyons of the breaks of the Clear Fork, was rough and hard to travel".

"Such herds of cattle had to be watched by night as well as day. Usually they would lie quietly all night unless disturbed, but sometimes a very slight, unusual noise would startle them, and then there was danger of a stampede, which is something to be dreaded. When a stampede once started, the cattle were beyond control. They would run at breakneck speed, and woe to anything in their way".
